The story behind Garden City Guppies

Garden City Guppies started the way every good fish project does — out of love for the hobby, frustration with what the market was selling, and a hunch that we could do better.

Why Augusta

Augusta, Georgia — the "Garden City" — gives us something most US breeders don't have access to: a climate that allows year-round outdoor fishkeeping. From late March through November our colonies live in outdoor tubs under direct sun, eating wild-caught microfauna alongside the prepared diet. In the coldest months we move them into a heated outbuilding, but the dominant production environment is outside.

This matters more than it sounds. Indoor fluorescent setups can produce beautiful fish, but they cannot replicate what direct sunlight does to color expression in a metallic-scale strain. Blue Dragons raised under fluorescents are pretty. Blue Dragons raised in our outdoor tubs glow.

What "breeder direct" actually means

Most of the live fish you see in pet shops and online stores have been through three to five middlemen: an offshore farm, an importer, a domestic wholesaler, a distributor, then the shop. Each link adds cost, stress, and time out of clean water.

When you order from Garden City Guppies, the chain has one link: us. The fish in your bag was in our tubs less than 48 hours ago, raised by us from a colony we line-bred for the strain you wanted.

Our strains

We focus on the strains that we keep because we genuinely love working with them — not because they're trendy. That means Blue Dragons and Red Dragons as our flagships, plus Koi pattern guppies, Ribbon-fins, Platinum lines, and a small medaka project on the horizon. On the shrimp side we work primarily with neocaridina — Red Cherry, Blue Dream, Sunkist Orange — kept in separate colonies to prevent cross-breeding and color regression.

How we keep prices fair

We aren't trying to be the cheapest. Premium genetics raised outdoors will always cost more than commodity fish raised in racks. What we are trying to do is price honestly — no inflated markups to cover middleman margins, and no race-to-the-bottom on bag count that would degrade welfare.

The live arrival guarantee — what we actually mean by it

Every shipment is guaranteed live. If something arrives DOA, photograph it in the bag, email us within 2 hours of delivery, and we will refund the loss or send replacements on the next ship day. No fighting, no fine print. We bake the (rare) loss into our model — it's not your problem.
